If you are coming to Halifax you will no doubt want to sample the widest selection of shopping in Nova Scotia. From big box retailers, to curious boutiques, you can find everything from a new ensemble, to that ideal souvenir.
Starting in downtown Halifax, shopping opportunities are practically endless. Bring a good pair of shoes; it is a hilly downtown so you’ll burn lots of calories– perfect for grabbing a delicious lunch at one of the many eateries that compliment the shopping selection. There are plenty of paid parking locations, just follow the P signage.
The hearth of shopping in downtown Halifax is Spring Garden Road. While Spring Garden goes all the way to Robie Street, the shopping begins at South Park, all the way down to Barrington Street. Both sides are laden with shops and services, I couldn’t possibly mention them all, but I’ll give a shout out to some of my favourites. City Centre Atlantic, 5523 Spring Garden Road, is my one-stop-does-it-all shopping – with a Pete’s Frootique offering groceries and great lunches, to Sushi Nami Royale’s died-and-went-to-heaven sushi, a homemade chocolatier, Premier Wine & Spirits offering a wide-selection of wines, spirits, and other intoxicating infusions, you’ll want to stop here to grab something for later. Across the way from Pete’s is Willows, a great find for pet lovers. I am a proud cat daddy, so I can’t resist popping in to grab some treats for kitty.
Barrington Street, and the smaller streets that make the downtown core, are a shopper’s delight. Particularly on a sunny day. You’ll find so many interesting stores, people, and selections – you may find shopping in downtown Halifax to be the highlight of your trip. The Black Market at 1545 Grafton Street is like stepping into a village market from India. A bewildering amount of décor, incense, jewellery, and other kitschy pieces of razzle dazzle await you. If you like the Black Market, next door at 1549 Grafton is Mary Jane’s Smoke Shop, draw your own conclusions.
Looking for leather boots? You might want to try Night Magic Fashions at 5268 Sackville Street. Offering something for the adult in all of us, Night Magic Fashions offers a lot more than you might expect, from playful novelties to wigs.
Dartmouth Crossing
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Dartmouth Crossing, and for good reason. This shopping paradise is located at Exit 4 off Highway 118; you’ll find two shopping experiences here. For starters, there is the usual box shopping – Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Staples, Michaels, Shoe Depot, Best Buy. Dartmouth Crossing also features a shopping area designed as a town downtown. There is abundant parking, and lots of stores, with a focus on clothing. You’ll find the Tommy Hilfiger Outlet, Le Château, Reitman’s, Ecko, Esprit, Mexx, Mexx Kids, Garage, Fairweather and more. In fact, there are new stores opening all the time. For the culinary crowd, like myself, the Cookhouse features a terrific assortment of cooking gadgetry – there is a tool here for every trick of the trade from mandolins to melon ballers.
Halifax Shopping Centre
At 7001 Mumford Road, it is hard not to miss Halifax Shopping Centre. It serves as an epicentre for the whole city, and also includes the annex, the former West End Mall. So from department store shopping at Wal-Mart, Sears, the Bay, Sport Check, to familiar brands that we all love, like Payless Shoes, Bootlegger, GAP, GAP Kids, Le Château, MAC Cosmetics, Body Shop, The Sony Store, Halifax Shopping Centre has something for all tastes. And speaking of tastes, don’t forget to stop by the extensive food court. And with a location at the entrance of Highway 102, getting to Halifax Shopping Centre couldn’t be easier, with over a dozen hotels located in a five kilometre radius, including the Best Western Chocolate Lake and the Holiday Inn Express Halifax-Bedford .
Back to School Shoppers
In addition to the range of stores and services at Dartmouth Crossing and Halifax Shopping Centre, Back to School Shoppers may also be interested in Micmac Mall, located in Dartmouth. Offering 160 shops and services, not just Back to School shoppers will enjoy this mall. The Old Navy is popular, especially for family-wide clothing, including youth, teens, and adult selections - you’ll find something to accessorize your wardrobe at an unbeatable price.
Of course, all the shopping in the city cannot be summarized into one blog, but rest assured, if you are headed to Halifax, shopping is bound to be apart of your trip. Don’t forget that you can add comments to this blog, so feel free to share your tips and recommendations for sensational shopping in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
