You know the drill – there’s always something going on in Halifax. This is your one-stop source for some great events that you won’t want to miss. I mean, where else can you tour greenhouses, and then do a tattoo and body piercing expo?
Saltscapes Expo April 25 (Noon – 8pm), 26 (10am-6pm), and 27 (10am-5pm); Exhibition Park. With over 250 exhibitorsunder one roof, this trade and lifestyle show has become one of the hottest events in Atlantic Canada. Weather you are visiting, shopping, or buying, with a selection like this you can’t help but find something that you’ll love. And besides, is it ever too early to jump start your December 2009 Christmas shopping? Only 243 shopping days left after all.
2008 IIHF World Hockey Championships May 2 – May 14. International youth hockey is taken to a whole different level at this premier sporting event, co-hosted between Halifax and Quebec City. Entries for 2008 include: Canada, Russia, Belarus, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, France, Finland, Italy, USA, Latvia, Slovenia, Germany and Norway. Cheer on team Canada as Halifax hosts the preliminary and qualifying rounds. Halifax Metro Centre, 5284 Duke Street.
Beer and Beethoven: When I think of German culture, Beer and Beethoven go hand-in-hand. So, is it any wonder why Symphony Nova Scotia planned a fundraiser that marries a great composer with a great beverage? May 2, and 3, at 8pm, at the Cunard Centre, 961 Marginal Road, Halifax. In addition to Classical and Maritime music, and the beer, there will be snacks and fun in a casual setting. Who ever said that only stuffy wine drinkers could enjoy classical?
Giant 3rd Annual 3-Day Outdoor Flea Market: One person’s junk is another person’s treasure. May 9 – 11, this 12-acre flea market can easily be found at Scotia Speedway, off Exit 6, Highway 102.
Greenhouse Open House May 10; two locations – 5711 Sackville Drive, Halifax & 62 Caledonia Road, Dartmouth. Hours of operation: 10am – 3pm. I know… going to see flowers at a Greenhouse may seem like an old lady-esque walk in the park smelling the roses. However, pop in and see what’s sprouting and you will be impressed. In fact, you may even be inspired to pick out a variety for your office desk, or home. With some of the best horticultural specimens in the province you will be impressed. Just in time for Mother’s Day.
Maritime Tattoo Festival May 17, 18 and 19; Halifax Forum, 2901 Windsor Street. $12 for a day ticket, $25 for a weekend ticket, or $65 for VIP including a night cruise and burlesque. Weather you are an admirer, or adorned with body jewellery and tattooing, this event will fascinate. This is the other Nova Scotia Tattoo, and actually involves needles and ink.
NAS in concert! How exciting is that! New York’s hottest hip-hop homeboy Nas rolls into town with local rapper Classified, Ghettosocks and The Heavy Spittaz. Cunard Event Centre, 961 Marginal Road, Halifax. Tickets fro Ticket Atlantic. Get on your favourite velour jumpsuit and watch these players drop rhymes – one of Halifax’s most anticipated concerts of the season!
